If a cell phone is locked, that means that it can only be used with one cell phone carrier company. Wireless carriers started requesting that the manufacturers lock their cell phones a few years ago. This all came about when cellular service carriers started offering free or deeply discounted cell phones if you signed up for a one or two year contract. The wireless carriers still do this now. To keep someone from signing up, getting the free phone and then switching to a different carrier, the wireless carrier companies had their phones locked by the manufacturer. This lock is also called a sub lock, spc lock or sim lock.

How can you tell if you have an unlocked cellular phone? First you must determine if your cell phone is GSM or CDMA. If your cell phone uses a sim card then it is GSM. U.S. GSM carriers are Cingular and T Mobile, for example. CDMA carriers are Verizon Wireless, US Cellular, Alltel, Qwest and Sprint PCS. Both types of cell phone can be locked and unlocked, but only the GSM phones can be easily switched from carrier to carrier.

The GSM cell phone is the easiest to deal with as once it's unlocked, the unlocked cellular phone will work with any active sim card. Cutting edge technology is one of the things that many people think of when they think of American society. However, in many areas of technology, other parts of the world have a significant technological edge. Cellphone technology and cellular communications is one such area. Believe it or not, most experts agree that Japan is at least two years ahead of the United States when it comes to cellphones and cellular networks. But by looking at the Japanese market, we can get a pretty good idea of what sort of features will soon exist on American cellphones.

The place to start is by looking at some of the features that already exist here but are very high end and costly. Some examples are radio, TV and streaming video for the cellphone. Customers in the US must pay an extra monthly subscription of around $10 and $20. Japanese customers on the other hand can get these services over a much wider range of handsets, and the service is more comprehensive, faster and less expensive. GPS enabled phones are also just starting to enter the US market but have been available in Japan for some time. Japanese cellphone software developers have developed a number of terrific GPS-aware applications, including mapping and direction finding applications, and even position-aware mobile games.

One of the biggest differences between Japanese and American cellphones is of course the phone itself. Japanese cellphones typically have much larger screen sizes (typically 240 by 320 pixels), while the higher end American cellphones are still generally 176 by 204 pixels. The cellphone is evolving toward being a device for storing personal information, like credit card numbers, bank account information and other sensitive information, and it is becoming more and more important for cellphones to be able to store this information securely. Cellphone manufacturers, most of whom are companies located outside the US, are now developing cellphone models for the US market with small fingerprint scanning sensors on the phone. These are generally sliding sensors where the user slides his or her finger over the sensor to enter a fingerprint. Software on the phone will try to match features of the newly scanned fingerprint with information stored from previous scans to validate the user and, if validated, give the user access to private data that had been previously on the cellphone.

The use of fingerprint scanning technology is also a foundation for another revolutionary cellphone feature already found in Japan, which is the use of cellphones to make payments wirelessly. In Japan, cellphone users with enabled cellphones can use these phones to buy soda from machines or enter public transport systems, all by sending encrypted financial information from their cellphones. All financial transactions require the digital equivalent of a signature authorizing the transaction, and this is where fingerprint verification is used. Financial institutions in the US are already working with cellphone manufacturers to bring these same features to the United Stated market. The technology itself already exists, but the financial institutions are working to develop the infrastructure and information security systems that are necessary to enable such a system to be successfully rolled out across the US market.

In the first generation of these systems, payment transactions are conducted by sending and receiving text messages. Further down the road, wireless network technologies may be used instead. For some early systems that do not have fingerprint authorization, a PIN code can be used to authorize the payment. Fingerprint verification methods are used for payment validation on phones where this technology exists. Of course, the use of fingerprint validation offers a higher level of security than does the use of PIN codes, so it may be the case that mobile payment technology will be delayed in the US market until the release of a wide variety of handsets that have built-in fingerprint sensors.

Blackberries were perceived by the ancient cultures as being a wild plant, and historical accounts for a backyard culture of blackberry bushes are few. The Greeks used the blackberry as a remedy for Gout, and the Romans made a tea from the leaves of the blackberry plant to treat various illnesses.

John Bartram, the early American explorer, botanist, and writer founded the first United States Botanical Garden, in 1728. In the early American colonies, William Bartram in his book, Travels, noted that General Oglethorpe was sent to the colony of Georgia in 1733 to investigate the possibility of establishing various temperate and subtropical plants which might "prove valuable for Georgia farms and orchards." William Bartram noted further in his book, Travels, that he his father, John Bartram, were sent to explore the Southern colonies that included East Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, and Alabama to take an inventory of plants growing there after the Spanish were expelled by the English. Bartram reported that just outside of Mobile, Alabama, it "grows here five or six feet high, rambling like Brier vines over the fences and shrubs."

Much of the first modern blackberry variety development was done in America, beginning with Judge Logan of California in 1880, and the release and introduction of the Loganberry.

The Boysenberry was developed from a natural selection saved from the abandoned farm of Mr. Rudolf Boysen by USDA member George Darrow, along with Walter Knott, a California fruit and berry enthusiast, whose wife began making berry preserves, and that farm later became the famous Knotts Berry Farm, located near the Walt Disney amusement park in California.

The Youngberry was developed in 1905 in Morgan City, Louisiana; it is a cross between Luther Burbank's, Phenomenal Berry, and the Austin-Mayes Dewberry, a trailing blackberry. This berry had excellent qualities, such as taste and high yields, and it soon replaced the Loganberry of California after its release.

Blackberry plants, Rubus spp., can not be truthfully separated accurately by taxonomists into species, because the original species that existed centuries ago have intercrossed themselves in the natural state so completely, and the natural selections have reached a critical composition and complexity, that cannot be adequately recreated through backcrosses. Blackberry vines and bushes grow in the native state on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. The adaptatation factor to growing blackberries is broad and the cold hardiness of the blackberry bushes and vines extends into extremely cold territories. The bush form blackberry is more cold hardy than the trailing blackberry vines, and the range of growth extends into the northwestern portions of the United States. The trailing blackberry vines are considered by most taxonomists to be: Rubus macropetalus, Rubus loganobaccus, and Rubus ursinus. Erect blackberry bushes that are recognized as native genera are: Rubus frondosus, Rubus argutus, and Rubus allegheniensis.

Thorns are present in native blackberry plants and the thorns prevent grazing wildlife, animals and birds from eating the vines before the berry bushes flower and later when blackberries are produced. When the blackberries grow and ripen, they are not only consumed by wildlife animals and birds, but they have been enjoyed by humans for centuries. Luther Burbank wrote in his book, Fruit Improvement, in 1921 that many hybrids had been developed by his efforts and others to grow thornless blackberry bushes and vines. These thornless creations were at first inferior in taste and quality to the thorny species; however, modern hybridizers of thornless blackberry plants have created the cultivars:

The most important new hybrid, the Triple Crown, was released by the USDA. These new thornless blackberry bushes are released for growing in the Middle Atlantic and Pacific Northwest. The Triple Crown is thornless and ripens early to midseason. The fruit is firm and black with a balanced sub-acid sweet taste and is aromatically pleasing. This berry release is expected to be the sensational highlight for gardeners everywhere expecting high quality and growing adaptation. Other, older thornless blackberry releases are: Apache, Hull, Thornfree, Black Satin, Arapaho, Navaho, Chester, and Boysenberry. All these blackberries have overcome the sticky problems of the original thornless blackberry hybrids. Commercial thorny blackberry production has been stimulated by an introduction of these blackberry released cultivars: Austin-Mayes dewberry, Chicasaw blackberry, Shawnee blackberry, Kiowa blackberry, Choctaw blackberry, Cherokee blackberry, Cheyenne blackberry, Lawton blackberry, and the Ouchita blackberry that makes you say 'ouch' when you pick them. Most of the above released blackberry cultivars are hybrids of a Brazos blackberry and Darrow cross.

Blackberries please the taste of humans as well as that of animals and are believed by many wildlife conservationists to be the most important naturalized growing plant that provides food for wildlife.

Wildlife animals and birds eat blackberries as food or receive a thorny protective cover from blackberry bushes or vines that wind along fences, animals such as quail, doves, turkey, raccoons, opossums, and believe it or not, bears. Perhaps children enjoy eating a fistful of blackberries from wild plants growing at the edge of the woods in summer, and then return home with the tell-tale purple stains on their teeth, lips, and clothing. Wild blackberries are delicious when they grow in profusion at the wood's edge into bushy plants or as trailing vines called dewberries. The delicate balance of a sweet and sour taste can stimulate the senses from the new hybrid cultivars towards heights unequaled by other berries or fruits.

Much of the early American blackberry hybridization was done by Luther Burbank, who introduced his Phenomenal Berry and even a white blackberry, but it was too soft to successfully ship commercially.

Although most botanists classify blackberry plants into 3 types, Erect, trailing vines, and semi-erect plants, the in-between semi-erect plants, theoretically, could be actually an erect plant loaded with ripe berries. That semi-erect classification offers little clarification of taxonomic principles.

On the other hand, it need not be that way especially if you have a portable MP3 player. The Internet has opened up a whole new learning avenue we can take advantage of, right from the comfort of our own home offices. A majority of courses online are in MP3 format or can be extracted to MP3. With the popularity of podcasts, teleseminars and web conferences, you will find no shortage of audio learning material. In fact the opposite is true - you may find yourself not having the opportunity to listen to all these great information. What an ironic twist of fate huh?

The New iPod Touch - Hype or Heaven?

With its physical similarity to the iPhone, the new iPod Touch creates an expectation of iPhone versatility in consumers while lacking iPhone features, such as camera and Bluetooth. Nor does it compare to traditional iPods - offering only 10% of the capacity of the iPod Classic. Despite offering web access via a special version of Safari, email is conspicuously absent.

Having said this, one of the main advantages of the iPod Touch is Apple's revolutionary new multi-touch user interface. The device features only two controls, the sleep/power switch and a Home button. All other features are accessed via the multi-touch screen.

The multi-touch interface starts with a single touch on the power button to turn the device on and take you to its "Home" screen. Select applications and settings with a touch of your finger, or push the Home button to return to the main screen. Touch an input box to open a touch sensitive keyboard. Touch to select items in a list. Touch a slide control to adjust a value.

Often when looking for an mp3 player people get confused and are unsure on what they should be looking for in the product. There is however one thing you should be aware of, hard-drives contain moving parts - because of this hard-drive based mp3 player are not suitable if you want to listen to your music while involving yourself in sport. These types of players also come as micro hard-drive players which are smaller but larger than flash based players, there storage capabilities are around the 2 GB to 8 GB range. One of the most popular hard-drive based players is the Apple iPod, the best selling hard-drive based mp3 player.

MP3 CD Discs/Players

Another option if you are looking to have a large amount of music in one unit is to burn your mp3s from your computer onto a mp3 disc. An mp3 disc is a regular CD with mp3s burnt onto it as data. You can normally fit about 150 - 200 mp3s on an mp3 disc and than place it in a CD player that plays mp3 encoded disc. The down side of mp3 discs is that they are of the larger scale and if knocked or bumped will tend to skip a lot.
